PRIVATE BANK

byometric® systems AG delivers the technology to drive the world’s largest installation of Iris recognition systems

A privately-held bank uses biometric solutions at its new headquarters to guarantee absolute access security

Mitterfelden / Genf, October 10, 2006 – byometric® systems AG today announced that it has won the contract to supply the iris recognition technology for the to-date largest privately financed biometric implementation project worldwide.
As many as 70 cameras – specialized for iris recognition - will be used to provide 100% control at all security-sensitive areas at the new headquarter of the private bank Pictet & Cie Private Banquiers.
Providing internal access control is part of a worldwide unique biometric project run by the general contractor Interflex AG Schweiz, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Ingersoll Rand Security Technologies. For the first time, a business completely substitutes traditional security solutions, like PIN, access cards or keys. Instead, the Geneva-based bank will solely rely on modern security technologies as well as biometric recognition solutions. Arriving and departing vehicles will be checked by using video camera-based automatic license plate recognition technology. Employee entrances to the headquarters will be relying on so-called speed gates with 3-D facial recognition technology to ensure that even during the morning rush, all 1.500 employees can access the building quickly – yet, without compromising access security.
The inner access of the bank, including the high security areas like vaults and IT data centers will be securely monitored through the usage of iris recognition technology. As many as 70 special high-resolution cameras will check access privileges and identity of each employee, based on the unique patterns of their irises. “Until now, biometric recognition solutions have been mainly used in combination with conventional authentication solutions like a passport,” said Alexander Lau, founder and CEO of byometric® systems AG. “In those solutions, the biometric components are being used to verify that the user of a passport is in fact the owner of the passport. The Swiss bank required that employees will not be required to carry any identification badge at work. While this is more convenient for each employee, more importantly, this solution eliminates a potential security gap, which exists through the re-use of lost or stolen or otherwise manipulated access cards by unauthorized personnel. A few years ago, granting access to people based on biometric recognition solutions alone – would have been science fiction”, continued Mr. Lau, and emphasized the visionary role of Pictet by implementing this type of security solution.
“For byometric® systems AG, this implementation is another milestone, as well,” said Mr. Lau. “For the first time, we will have proof in a large scale project for our claim that iris recognition technology is powerful enough to recognize an unlimited number of individuals based on their eyes - 100 percent guaranteed.”
